The Library Planning Committee selects Richard Stahl, a Drury graduate, as the architect for the new Walker Library. The Trustees and Administration tell Stahl that they want the new building to be in the “American Collegiate Gothic” style. When he presents his initial plans to the Library Building Committee, it is a modern design, closer to the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. There is stunned silence until Mary Elizabeth Hinkley, the College Librarian, turns to the architect and says, “Mr. Stahl, why, that’s the most beautiful building I’ve ever seen!”
